Allison, the Baker

Monday evening Allison and I were invited to attend the Mother-Daughter Salad Supper at our church.  The Evening Circle always sponsors the evening just prior to Mother's Day weekend.  In addition to the carry in salad supper, the committee puts on some sort of entertainment/program.  This year's program was put on by one of the members, Sandy Swart.  Sandy is the church secretary, but she is primarily a cake decorator.  She does lovely cakes, very ornate; she is very talented.  Instead of decorating cakes, however, she showed some different ideas for making, decorating, and using cupcakes.  Cupcakes are pretty 'hot' now.

Allison has enjoyed making cupcakes in the past anyway, and has made them here at home and also with her two grandmas.  So, it should have come as no surprise that Tuesday morning when she came down from bed, she asked me if we could make cupcakes, and "decorate them like the lady at church last night did."

She is becoming quite a talented little baker.  I had no idea that she could crack her own raw eggs and do a really good job at getting no shells in the batter.  She pretty much has a good handle on how to measure the water and the vegetable oil in for a cake mix, beginning to understand well 1 1/4 vs. 1/4 c.

For her demonstration, Sandy had little demonstration bowls of different decorative items to use when making different characters or designs on the top of the cupcakes.  Our kitchen counters were filled with cereal bowls of little confections that Allison searched for in our kitchen, including full size graham crackers (which ultimately she did not use).
Notice the "neatness" of the workspace....not! :) LOLOLOL
Another thing that Sandy showed was different ways to present the cupcakes when dining, i.e., inverted champagne glasses, serving platters, etc.   Here is an example of a 6-year old interpretation.

...and this is what was left for momma to clean up...   Allison did pretty well at the bigger stuff clean up, but it was better if I took over the intricate clean up....

Teacher Appreciation Gift

This week is Teacher Appreciation Week, with Tuesday being the actual Teacher Appreciation Day, I guess. I had made this 'Letter Flower" arrangement  a few weeks ago, and wasn't sure when to give it to Allison's teacher.  This seemed like a good occasion.

I used the "Speaking of School' Cricut cartridge, and cut out all 26 letters of the alphabet.  Then I inked all the edges with a light brown ink pad and highlighted all lined details with a microtip black pen; the shapes were mounted on black cardstock.  Each letter was glued to a craft dowel rod, and strips of different colored tulle were tied to the rods to mimic leaves.  The dowels were stuck in a cube shaped floral foam and put in a regular garden style clay flower pot.  I added a wide purple ribbon and tied a decorative bow for added zip.

Osama Bin Laden is Dead

What a beautiful picture this is....   I was born an American, I was raised an American, and I am still an American.  While I don't claim to be one of these flag-toting, over the top zealots, I am proud to be an American.  For the majority of my life, I have also been a passive proud American.  I have always taken being an American and all that came with that 'title' for granted, a God-given, God-blessed 'right' I suppose.  I live in a very 'normal' area of the country.  It's one of the best areas of the world to live.  Small, rural, relatively calm and quiet, some say boring, pretty safe....  I am truly blessed and fortunate to have been born and raised here.  Thanks be to God that I have not had any horrific trials in my life. I have been blessed.

Almost 10 years ago, when the events surrounding September 11, 2001, occurred, fear pretty much spread across the country.  Even though I was 1,500 or so miles away from Ground Zero in New York City, or the Pentagon in Washington, DC, or a field in Pennsylvania, there was a sense of paralyzing fear for a period of time.  There was so much unknown.  The biggest unknown was....why?   We knew the who...the where..the when...but the why was so hard to understand.  They way of life for the individuals who hijacked and flew those planes full of people to their deaths is impossible to imagine.  Their disregard for the greatest gift of all...that of life...is unfathomable to me.

Last night, the United States Marine special ops brought down the head kingpin of Al-Quida...Osama Bin Laden is dead, killed in his 'sprawling compound' in Pakistan.

Royal Wedding of the 21st Century

I am not a Royal watching junkie. Honestly I am not.  However, it is still an event worth documenting.  Princess Diana's oldest son Prince William married his long-time love, Kate Middleton, Friday, April 29, 2011.  I didn't get up in the middle of the night to watch the festivities, but caught different clips throughout the morning.  Beautiful wedding gown. Cute little kids. :)

Easter

Easter weekend this year...we had a good weekend.  I tutored on Saturday morning, but Bruce took Allison to the Easter egg hunt that Thrivent sponsored at Allison's school.  She came home with a lot of loot from that one. :)  He then took her to the egg hunt at the Country Club, so she was a happy girl.

Sunday, we went to Aunt Marilyn's house for a nice dinner with the family...everyone was there, and it is always a nice time.  Got to see my niece, baby Shelby again, but unfortunately did not get any pictures taken this time. It was a pretty nice time weatherwise too.

"The Cousins"

It was so wonderful to see Cousin "Baby Shelby".  We hadn't been able to visit with her since Christmas, and it was so fun seeing her.  She had, of course, grown so much in the past three months.  However, she is still, of course, A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E!  She is such a sweetie.  Allison loved to hold her and carry her around.  Bless little Shelby's heart, she seemed to be pretty used to being lugged around, and was very tolerant.

Grandma Joyce had gotten the girls matching dresses, and we tried to get pictures of the girls together.  It was hard to get them "just perfect" where you could see the dresses well; it seemed that when Allison was ready, then Shelby was squirmy, and by the time that we had coaxed Shelby to a position, then Allison had lost interest in what she was supposed to do, and was looking somewhere else or had her arms flinging around. :) Tons of candid pictures!!! HA!

Happy April Fool's Day!

APRIL FOOL'S!!!!  HA HA HA HA Ha ha ha ha
...cuz yesterday was April Fool's Day...get it?    ahem...  not that good, huh?
It's the best that I personally am able to do.

April Fool's Day to me is like St. Patrick's Day...I might try to participate in it just to stay with the group but it's not that big of a deal to me.  Am I a fuddy dud or what?   Allison tried to have fun  with it with her dad, they were having squirrels and rabbits on the head, etc.

Actually, it was yesterday.  I went and had my first mammogram.  I know, I am a little past due...like 5 years...I was supposed to have one when I was 40, and then one every year after that I think.  It just was the unknown.  It really wasn't that bad.  It wasn't the funnest thing in the world, of course, but I would rather have a mammogram than a pap, that's for sure.  They had me fill in a postcard with my address to send out reminder card next year when it's time. I think that's a great idea, otherwise, it might be another 5 years before I go back! HA!
