Atlanta/Savannah Vacation - Day 4

This was the last day we were planning to spend in Savannah.  We had enjoyed out stay here.  The weather was gorgeous, and we saw a lot of really nice vegetation and homes.

Before we left Savannah, we made one final stop at the Wormslee Plantation.  It is located just outside of Savannah.  It was built around the 1750s I believe, so all that is left of the home is just a very small partial part of the surrounding walls.  It was called a Tabby House, I think because of how it was built and the walls were made.

Following the plantation, we drove up to Augusta, GA, and visited their canal and took an hour-long canal boat tour.  It was a nice enough quiet hour journey.  The visitor's center/museum was very well done.

Tonight now we have arrived in Columbia, South Carolina.  We are planning to spend the day tomorrow here, visiting the state capitol, museum, etc.

Atlanta/Savannah Vacation Day 3

We went separate ways in the morning...Bruce wanted to go on a walking architecture tour while Allison and I did not. So while he did that, we went to the mall.  Barnes and Noble is always a favorite.  Allison discovered I think that malls and shops are not as much fun when you don't have money budgeted for this plus not easily being able to transport additional  home in the plane ago she wasn't all that excited about lack of purchases.

It  time for lunch when Bruce picked us up.  We were going to try Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room but the line went down the block. We discovered Crystal Beer Room which still had a 45-.minute wait but it reviewed well.

After lunch we used our tickets for Massie Heritage Center which was a school for poor children in the mid 1800s.  It also included architecture  city planning so there was something for everyone.

We drove  to Tybee Island for the beach.  It was very foggy still difficult to see the ocean.

We went to the City Market  dinner and live music as well as fresh yummy pralines which we all discovered are addictive.

Atlanta/Savannah Vacation December 2016 - Day 2

Today is Monday, December 26, and thankfully shops and activities are up and running and open again.  We started the day boarding a tour trolley of the city, doing some sightseeing of the downtown, historic part of Savannah.  There are a lot of churches, parks/squares, and beautiful large historic mansions in Savannah.  This area is the factors row (whatever that means for sure), and on the other side of the buildings is the riverfront area.

 I liked this statue and the Maya Angelou saying in-scripted on the base.

 Allison of course spied the candy story.

Part of our trolley sightseeing tour was also a paddle boat tour. I was the one who suggested this as in the past in other areas the water tours are very informative.  This one, however, wasn't so much. It got very, very technical into the shipping boats and containers and I don't know what else he was talking about because it seemed to go over my head.  Because this is the largest shipping port in Georgia, this area was very industrial, and not necessarily very pretty on the water either.  The buildings on the waterfront were cool, but the shipping area not so much. 

 This was an example of one of the large shipping boats with containers going down the river.

We went by Fort Jackson. 

Upon getting off the boat, we went to the Savannah Museum of History.  It was small but well done.  One of my favorite exhibits was a temporary exhibit about quilts.  I liked this example quite a bit.  It was a quilt made in the 30s or the 40s, and it was made out of flour sacks.  I took a picture of the faded flour bag stamp on the back. 

Upon leaving the museum, we were going to stop at the Leopold Ice Cream parlor, which has been in business since 1919, and has a really good reputation ("Tutti Frutti"), but the line waiting for ice cream went waaaaaay down the block, and none of us (especially Bruce) had the patience for that line "just" for ice cream. 

So, another good stop for this time of day was the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, which was just beautiful. It is an actual "working" parish but it is open for tourists.

The poinsettia tree was pretty. Our tour guide on the trolley said it was made up of well over 300 plants. I don't know....probably.  There were other plants setting around the area as well. 

 The large pipe organ above the entry way in the back of the church. I think this would be really great to hear played.

This display was in the front, to the right of the altar area.  It was lovely and very detailed and exhibited the story of Jesus' birth as well as the area around Bethlehem, with the wise men and shepherds, etc.  

Notice in the middle of the left side in the above photo....I think there was an item that maybe wasn't supposed to be there ultimately.

It was cute regardless of the intent. 

We then walked down the block to one of the many "squares" in the historic area of Savannah. This is the Troup Square. 

 On our way back to our hotel, we did drive past Paula Deen's restaurant, The Lady and Sons.
